Changing Lives Through Literacy- Marybell’s Story

A Journey of Strength and Determination

When Marybell arrived in the U.S. from Venezuela in 2019, she carried with her the hope of a better future for her family. Leaving behind a successful career in accounting and a thriving business, she and her husband made the difficult decision to start over due to the political instability and safety concerns in their home country.

Adjusting to life in a new country came with challenges, especially the language barrier. Though she had always loved English, she realized quickly that understanding wasn’t enough—she needed to improve her speaking skills. One defining moment was a meeting at her son’s school, where the translator struggled to fully explain what was being said. “I really wanted to say many things, to express my feelings, but I couldn’t finish my sentences very well,” she recalls. That frustration pushed her to commit to improving her English.

Through her studies at the Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center, Marybell has gained not only language skills but also confidence. “I can keep a conversation now, and I’m not scared. Even if I don’t pronounce everything perfectly, I can communicate.” Her progress has already opened doors—she has begun applying for jobs and dreams of building her business to eventually serve both English and Spanish-speaking customers.
